A malfunctioningsoldering iron may expose the components to a significant voltage via its tip, including electrostatic discharge (ESD event) and/orelectrical overstress (EOS). If a soldering iron is not grounded properly, the voltage on the tip can reach as high as the AC linevoltage (i.e. AC 110V to 220V) due to capacitive coupling with power line cables. Studies* show that the current to the boardsfrom such contact can exceed several amperes damaging the components. Simply touching the board with tweezers when theoperator is not grounded can generate a damaging discharge.
