Nearly two-thirds of the world’s giant oil and gas fields(those with>500 MMBOE recoverable reserves)are contained in clastic reservoirs.The dominance of clastic over carbonate and fractured reservoirs reflects the following:(1)the abundance of porous sandstones in the geologicalrecord;(2) their common inter-stratification with impermeable sealing shales;and(3)hydrocarbon source rocks are overwhelmingly clastic in origin.
