Saudi Aramco recently reported that its EXPEC Advanced Research Center (EXPEC ARC) and North Ghawar Producing Department have completed successful field trials of a new proprietary Inline Water Separator (IWS) technology.

The IWS, which is composed of a series of compact vessels containing proprietary technologies to separate water from oil, removes water from production before it enters pipelines leading to gas-oil separation plants (GOSPs). Early separation of the water in this manner increases the efficiency of the GOSP and reduces any pressure imposed on the well, which helps ensure that oil production is not hindered.

The IWS is also expected to remove smaller oil droplets—which can be damaging to a reservoir—from the separated water before it is reinjected into the ground. The separator is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for monitoring the efficiency of separation and precise process controls, according to the company.

Additional benefits of the new separator include a reduced risk of pipeline corrosion, lower emulsions, and energy savings by separating and injecting disposal water closer to the disposal wells. The IWS will also help Saudi Aramco avoid the costs associated with expanding existing water-handling facilities.

Trial runs were carried out from January to April 2009 and covered a wide range of oil rates at different water cuts, with encouraging results.

“EXPEC ARC anticipates the longer-term needs of the company and develops the technological solutions to address those needs,” said Mohammed Y. Al-Qahtani, Saudi Aramco’s executive director of Petroleum Engineering and Development. “This innovative project will help to extend field life and increase oil recovery at lower cost.”

“With the IWS, we can now handle the water closer to its source and prolong the life of our fields while minimizing the use of artificial lift,” said Abdulaziz O. Al-Kaabi, acting manager of EXPEC ARC.
