Underwater infrastructure in the Oil & Gas industry is subject to harsh operating conditions, and its repair has remained a challenge. While composite materials are attractive as a flexible repair material, the selected material needs to simultaneously insensitive to sea water, able to withstand relatively high temperatures emanating from production pipes, and easily handled by underwater divers in application.

PETRONAS has undertaken collaborative development with the Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) to develop a novel composite prepreg for use in underwater repair of pipelines, with the solution to be known as PIPEASSURE™. The repair system has been used at PETRONAS’ offshore facilities in Sarawak.

A key driver for the development of this repair material was the ability to avoid expensive shutdown of production during pipe repair. The repair material can also be used for life extension of pipes where internal erosion or corrosion has compromised the pipe.

The development by PETRONAS has highlighted the potential for composites to make significant inroads into the Oil & Gas sector, with implementation of repair technologies and approaches being a central focus to PETRONAS’ engagement in CRC-ACS. In the underwater application area the light weight of composites has significant impact on the ability of divers to manage the repair process.
